WNBA viewership declines while Caitlin Clark is sidelined due to injury

WNBA’s TV Ratings Drop Amid Caitlin Clark’s Injury

The WNBA has seen a notable decline in TV ratings, especially as key player Caitlin Clark from the Indiana Fever remains sidelined due to a quad injury. Clark had to miss five consecutive games after straining her quadriceps during a match against the New York Liberty, where the Fever suffered a narrow 90-88 loss.

Initially, recovery was anticipated to take about two weeks, but Clark hasn’t been cleared to participate in Saturday’s game against the Liberty. Her absence not only impacts her team but also contributes to decreased viewer engagement for the WNBA overall.

Recent Nielsen data revealed an alarming 55% drop in WNBA viewership since Clark’s injury on May 24. Additionally, games featuring the Fever have reported a 53% decrease in ratings. This trend underscores a broader concern as some of the Fever’s recent games have only been aired on platforms that weren’t tracked by Nielsen.

For instance, after Clark was injured, most of the subsequent games for the Fever were televised on NBA TV or Ion, rather than major networks. The latest matchup against the Chicago Sky attracted an average of 1.92 million viewers, a significant number, yet, a reminder that this was still less than the fervor observed during the season opener.

Fever head coach Stephanie White acknowledged the team’s readiness to rely on Clark’s backup, though she didn’t clarify if Clark is cleared for any basketball activities. She mentioned that both Clark and teammate Sophie Cunningham have had limited practice time.

Despite the challenges, Clark has shown impressive stats when on the court, averaging 19 points, 9.3 assists, and six rebounds in her four games this season. As the team navigates this difficult phase, there’s a mix of anticipation and uncertainty about what lies ahead for Clark and the Fever.
