Cryptocurrency Market Decline
On Thursday, cryptocurrencies faced a notable downturn, particularly as the evening wore on in the U.S. markets.
Bitcoin experienced a drop of over 2.5% in the past 24 hours, landing at $105,900. However, altcoins like Ether, Solana, XRP, and Dogecoin fared worse, with declines between 5% and 7%.
The day began on a sour note for risk assets as President Trump issued warnings about potential new tariffs, coinciding with the nearing deadline of his trade agreement in early July.
Additionally, the collapse of nuclear talks with Iran has escalated concerns about possible Israeli military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Trump said, “There’s a possibility of a massive conflict.” He indicated to reporters that there is a need to instruct Americans in the region to evacuate due to possible imminent escalations.
“While I wouldn’t say it’s imminent, there’s a very real danger,” Trump noted, suggesting Israel could catch Iran off guard, although he has advised against attacks during the ongoing negotiations.
In contrast, U.S. stocks managed to navigate these headlines with a slight recovery, while the cryptocurrency market struggled to keep up.
Federal Reserve’s Stance
Over the last few weeks, risk assets, including crypto, have been influenced by discussions at the U.S. Federal Reserve regarding upcoming monetary policy changes.
Yet, emerging data suggests that weak economic indicators might soon necessitate some reaction from the Fed. On Thursday, reports from May’s Producer Price Index came in softer than expected, both in overall and core measures. Additionally, first-time unemployment claims unexpectedly rose to 248,000 last week.
Continued claims for unemployment benefits also climbed, reaching 1.956 million, marking three consecutive increases since November 2021.
Trump maintained his critiques of Jerome Powell, the Fed chairman. He reiterated that Powell’s position is secure until 2026 but warned, “I might need to take some action.” However, firing Powell, he indicated earlier, isn’t a path he considers.
