Trump officials criticize Sen. Alex Padilla's reaction during Noem press conference: 'Total madman'

White House Officials Criticize Senator Padilla’s Behavior

During a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, White House officials labeled Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif) as “childish” after an incident involving Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem. They expressed strong disapproval of Padilla’s actions.

“Senator Padilla should feel embarrassed about his behavior today,” a spokesperson mentioned on social media. “He disrupted an important press conference and hastily approached the podium, ignoring instructions from law enforcement.”

Padilla, 52, had previously worked as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and had been in Los Angeles for an event just last week. His actions during the press conference quickly gained traction on social media and were widely covered by news outlets.

White House Communications Director Stephen Chan also criticized Padilla, stating, “By interrupting Secretary Noem in such a reckless manner, he showcased an alarming disregard for decorum.” In another post, Chan described Padilla’s antics as “indifferent.”

DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on Padilla’s “incredibly aggressive” behavior, noting that many attendees were unaware of who he was during the episode. “Padilla’s actions were disrespectful, as he didn’t identify himself or display appropriate security credentials,” she added, highlighting the concern raised by a Secret Service agent present at the event.

After the incident, Noem recalled that she had a brief 15-minute conversation with Padilla, during which they exchanged phone numbers and agreed to continue their discussions. “I hope he will avoid creating such scenes in the future,” she expressed.

In a separate incident, Padilla had yelled questions at Noem during the press conference and refused to comply with requests to leave the briefing area, escalating tensions further.

Despite the backlash from the White House, some Democrats defended Padilla’s actions. Former Vice President Kamala Harris remarked that the senator was advocating for millions of Californians seeking accountability from the administration regarding its actions in Southern California.

Harris also criticized the administration’s response, calling it an abuse of power, and expressed concern over how this might reflect on other workers across the state and the nation. “If this is the way the administration treats senators with inquiries, I can only guess how they’re treating workers,” Padilla remarked following the incident. “We will hold this administration accountable.”
