Giants Adjust Offseason Training Routine
This year, the Giants are ramping up their 7-on-7 drills during the offseason. It’s a regular process each spring, mixing workouts, organized team activities, and training camps.
Head coach Brian Daboll mentioned this change after newly acquired quarterback Russell Wilson suggested enhancing the practice structure. “It’s important for us to listen to the quarterbacks since they handle the ball on every play,” Daboll remarked. He emphasized that they’re putting more focus on competitive situations, addressing not just third downs but considering game quarters and scores as well.
For Wilson, this represents another learning curve as he adjusts to a new offensive system—the Giants being the fourth team he’s played for in five years. The more he practices, especially in drills with defenders, the quicker he can familiarize himself with the new setup.
The Giants are slated to play the Jets on August 16 in their annual preseason clash. Prior to that, they’ll engage in two joint practices, one at their facility and one at the Jets’ complex.
Daboll found success with the idea of co-practices last summer and set it up again with the Jets, now under first-year coach Aaron Glenn. “I have a good relationship with AG,” Daboll commented, referring to Glenn. They have known each other for a long time, having both spent years developing their professional rapport. He feels that these joint practices benefit both teams, offering valuable experience instead of routine practices.
The Giants also face the Bills and the Patriots during the preseason but don’t have similar cooperative sessions with those teams.
In practice news, receiver Malik Nabers sat out again due to a toe injury. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Jackson Dirt connected with tight end Daniel Bellinger for some touchdowns during a 7-on-7 period, showing promise for the team’s future.
Additionally, offensive lineman Jon Runyan returned to team drills for the first time following shoulder surgery, and defensive lineman Cory Durden made an interception against a Tommy DeVito pass.
