Chaminade’s Jack Moran Announces Resignation After Legendary Lacrosse Career

After 45 years, Jack Moran, the head lacrosse coach at Chaminade, has decided to step down, wrapping up a remarkable career marked by 21 championships and an impressive 629 victories.

“I’m really going to miss the humor,” Moran, 73, shared in a conversation with the Post. “You know, watching games with my kids… I always put in my best effort, 100% of the time.”

Once he made the announcement about his resignation, Moran was overwhelmed with support, receiving “178 text messages and about 100 emails” from past players. They often fondly reflect on their days with him as a coach.

“I know all these guys,” he said, referring to the players he’s influenced since starting in 1979. But, it’s not entirely goodbye. Moran will transition into an advisory role within the Catholic school’s program, known for recruiting students for the university.

This new position will allow him to focus on developing the team and enhancing its depth. As he noted, it’s important to ensure that young athletes are in the right sports by their sophomore year. It sounds like he has a lot on his plate, but it’s something he seems passionate about.

“I won’t be doing those road trips anymore, though,” he said. “I’ve got plans to catch my grandson’s games over the weekends! But I might still swing by Delburton’s games.”

Gregory Kay, the school’s chief academic officer and a 1998 graduate, has been appointed to take over the coaching responsibilities in the spring.

Reflecting on his last game, Moran, who led the Flyers to their latest championship in 2018, faced a tough defeat against the rival St. Anthony’s last month, losing 16-12. Interestingly, he mentioned, “Honestly, I’m glad it went to St. Anthony’s. If I had to go out, I’d rather it be against such a worthy team.”

Carle Place Softball Team Advances to State Semi-Finals

Shifting gears, Carle Place’s softball team is making headlines as they head into the state semi-finals, aiming to secure the town’s first-ever state championship in sports.

The team, boasting a 19-5 record, will face off against Chatham, who holds a 20-3 record, this Friday night.

“We don’t know anything about them, so we’ll be going in blind,” said sophomore Alexa Mifsud, a third baseman.

Despite the uncertainty, the team’s confidence remains high. Junior Isabella DeGroot, who contributes as a first baseman and outfielder, nostalgically recalled some nerves before their first round in the Nassau County tournament. They trounced Cold Spring Harbor 18-0, and that dominant win helped them gauge their capability against tough competition.

“We’re preparing for any pitch they throw at us; we’ve done a lot of hitting drills for that,” DeGroot mentioned.

In a separate local event, the American Patriot amputee softball team, recognized nationally for its work, will visit Long Island to join local teams like the LI Senior All-Star and the Li All-Star at 1:30 PM this Saturday at the Moritz Athletic Complex.
