Texas Woman Arrested for Human Smuggling
A woman in Texas was arrested on Wednesday after Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers found 25 undocumented migrants hidden in a box truck, concealed behind mattresses and in a crawl space.
The suspect, 43-year-old Sylvia Patricia Santa Maria from Houston, faces 25 counts of human smuggling and is currently in custody at the Oak County Jail.
The incident began at about 9:30 AM when a citizen approached a DPS trooper at a truck stop along Interstate 37 in George West, Texas, regarding a minor crash in the parking lot.
The trooper then contacted Santa Maria, the driver of a white 2005 International box truck involved in the incident. She reportedly told officers she was heading to Houston after picking up a mattress in Alton, Texas.
During the investigation, the troopers noticed irregularities in her travel plans, leading them to request permission to search the truck.
With assistance from the George West Police Department, they found the 25 undocumented immigrants crammed into the small rear compartment of the truck, buried beneath 30 mattresses and within the walls of the vehicle. Notably, there was no ventilation in the area.
The group, comprising 12 men, 12 women, and an 11-year-old child, originated from several countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, India, Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.
After the migrants were removed from the truck, they received medical evaluations before being handed over to U.S. Border Patrol.
This incident sheds light on ongoing issues of human smuggling, reminiscent of a previous tragic event in 2022, where officials in San Antonio uncovered 51 deceased migrants in an abandoned trailer. Authorities suggested that trailer had been left behind following mechanical failures, as city workers discovered it after hearing cries from within. At least 46 people lost their lives at the scene with more dying later at the hospital.
