Understanding the signs regarding the halted $8B Paramount-Skydance agreement

Recently, there’s been a lot of chatter about the seemingly stalled $8 billion deal between Skydance and Paramount.

Could Wall Street insiders be trying to discern whether Shari Redstone, Paramount’s heir, is willing to give former President Trump what he wants to resolve a hefty $20 billion lawsuit against the CBS subsidiary?

If she does, that might just be enough to get the transaction approved by the broadcasting regulator.

Some have speculated that meaning lies in the recent layoffs at Paramount—about 3% of its workforce. This typically isn’t something you see right before a merger; it’s more likely done to streamline operations.

Management seems to be rethinking their business priorities, especially when it comes to upcoming strategies.

As reported, Paramount’s leadership is cautious about public perception, particularly concerning the lawsuit. There’s a fear, perhaps justified, that they could face backlash over an interview mishandled by “60 Minutes,” which might raise bribery questions if they settle.

While those concerns are valid, the layoffs seem somewhat detached from the deal’s future.

Originally, Skydance had intended to take over Paramount by this point and make the necessary cuts to align their finances before growth. Instead, Paramount ended up as the first move in a game of sorts.

Another angle in this saga involves Skydance’s David Ellison being spotted at a recent UFC event, mingling with names like Joe Rogan and Shaquille O’Neal, which some think could hint at political maneuvering.

There’s speculation that Trump could be positioning himself to approve this deal as a favor to David’s father, with Trump seen chatting with key figures from the Ellison family.

Interestingly, amidst this, Elon Musk also made an appearance, showing a complicated relationship with Trump given some recent remarks. Not too long ago, Musk offered a kind of semi-apology, yet he was right there, close to Trump, with Ellison and his son.

In the end, anyone hoping to find clear signs about when this deadlock might end will need to wait and perhaps flip those metaphorical tea leaves again.
