Bryson DeChambeau almost avoids a mistake with US Open rules

DeChambeau Faces Early Round Challenge at US Open

It wasn’t exactly the start that Bryson DeChambeau hoped for at the 2025 US Open held at Oakmont Country Club.

On the opening day, he nearly made a significant rules mistake by placing his ball at the nearest relief point instead of properly taking a drop.

After realizing the possible one-stroke penalty, he corrected himself and completed the drop correctly to sidestep any violations.

“That was stupid,” he commented, somewhat frustrated but managing to laugh it off.

As DeChambeau aims for his second consecutive US Open victory, he wrapped up the first round with a score of 3-over-73, which included two birdies and five bogeys.

For his second round, he’ll tee off alongside Xander Schauffele and newly signed LIV golfer Jose Luis Ballester at 1:14 PM on Friday.

The 31-year-old, known as one of the sport’s prominent figures, struggled at this particular Pittsburgh area course.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, faced his own challenges, finishing with a 74 just two months after winning the Masters, opting not to speak with the media afterward.

Shane Lowry from Northern Ireland also had a rough day, shooting a 9-over-79.

In contrast, JJ Spaun shone brightly on Thursday, finishing with an impressive bogey-free 4-under-66.

DeChambeau has his sights set on the last two majors of this season, having tied for fifth in the recent Masters and watching Scottie Scheffler capture his third major title.
