Former CIA Analyst Sentenced for Leaking Classified Information

A former CIA analyst has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for unlawfully transmitting highly classified national defense information. The U.S. Department of Justice has stated that Asif William Lerman, 34, faced this sentence for providing sensitive information to unauthorized recipients.

Before his arrest, Lerman had access to sensitive compartmentalized information and held a top-secret security clearance. On October 17, 2024, it was reported that he accessed and printed two documents containing national defense information concerning U.S. military operations.

The leaked information included details about possible Israeli military actions against Iran, highlighting troop movements and other preparations. Lerman filmed these documents and shared them through the Telegram messaging app, with one recipient uploading the content to social media the very next day.

The Department of Justice noted that Lerman began deleting files from his workplace on the same day he printed the documents. Roman Rozhavsky, an assistant director at the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, emphasized that this breach puts American lives and national security in jeopardy. He warned that the FBI would take all necessary measures to address unauthorized disclosures of sensitive information.

On November 7, 2024, a grand jury indicted Lerman for these actions. The FBI apprehended him in Cambodia while he was on work assignment on November 12, 2024. He later pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

John Eisenberg, the Attorney General for National Security, remarked that this case underscores the DOJ’s commitment to safeguarding the American public. He stated that Lerman had betrayed both his country and the trust placed in him as a government employee by leaking highly sensitive information.
