Los Angeles Riots Result in Injuries to Deputies
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna shared on Friday that around a dozen deputies have sustained injuries amid the ongoing riots. The disturbances began on June 6, coinciding with raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city and nearby areas.
Sheriff Luna reported that ten deputies were hurt when protesters hurled rocks, Molotov cocktails, and “high-quality fireworks.” He pointed out a significant distinction between peaceful demonstrators and those wielding weapons. “We’ve encountered some interesting weapons,” he remarked, emphasizing the difference in intentions.
There was a press conference focusing on strategies to handle upcoming protests planned for Saturday against the Trump administration. Sheriff Luna expressed the need for law enforcement to refrain from property destruction or violent conduct while maintaining order.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the LAPD is fully geared up for anticipated demonstrations and the “unprecedented” crowds expected. He assured that they will closely monitor the situation, strategically deploying resources to enable peaceful protests while ensuring public safety.
“If you come to our city intending to commit crimes or harm others, including our officers, you will face arrest,” he warned, urging attendees of the upcoming protests to respect the rights of others and act peacefully.
Since the protests began, Chief McDonnell noted that hundreds of individuals have been arrested. He indicated that the curfew, which is in effect for the weekend, has significantly contributed to restoring order by curtailing nighttime criminal activity. Meanwhile, California Highway Patrol (CHP) troopers will be active in patrols throughout the state, paying particular attention to any hotspots.
