Impact of GLP-1 Medications on Hair Loss
Side effects from GLP-1 medications can vary, with one notable outcome—often overlooked—is hair loss or thinning. Some hair stylists have reported an uptick in clients who mention experiencing hair loss during their weight loss journeys.
Ashlie Di Matto, who runs Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in Westchester, New York, along with Briana Del Becchio, a color specialist at the same salon, shared their observations in an interview. They noted that several clients had concerns about hair loss correlating with their use of weight loss medications.
“We’ve definitely seen an increase in hair loss among our clients,” Di Matto remarked, adding that this can range from gradual thinning to significant hair loss. Del Becchio echoed these sentiments, noting that some clients reported hair that appeared thinner and drier.
Hairstylists using GLP-1 medications indicated that hair changes could stem from multiple factors: the effects of new medications, vitamin deficiencies, and the physical stress of weight loss.
Becky Watt, a veteran hair stylist from Ohio, mentioned that one of her clients observed significant hair thinning while on weight loss medication. She commented, “I’ve noticed my hair becoming thinner and it comes out easily, especially when I wash it.” However, she also pointed out that not all clients on these medications experience hair loss.
Medical Insights
In a separate discussion, Dr. Philip Rabito, an endocrinologist from New York City, provided further insights. He explained that a reaction called telogen effluvium occurs as a stress response to significant weight loss, affecting hair follicles. He emphasized that this reaction is usually temporary. Once the individual stabilizes their weight after a few months, hair often regrows.
“Weight loss can trigger a response that the body interprets as starvation,” Rabito stated. He noted that the rate at which weight is lost correlates with the likelihood of experiencing hair loss.
Traditionally, bariatric surgery led to significant weight loss over a short period, which can prompt similar hair loss. “The body might not recognize healthy weight loss and instead think it’s experiencing starvation,” he reiterated. Moreover, those who lose weight rapidly or repeatedly are at a higher risk for hair loss, particularly if they have existing micronutrient deficiencies.
Deficiencies in vitamins like iron, B12, or vitamin D can worsen during weight loss, which is why he advises working closely with healthcare professionals to monitor these levels.
Some stylists have noted that clients who retain their appetite while on medication tend to avoid hair loss. “It seems like those with no appetite—who are really cutting back on nutrients—are the ones struggling most,” Watt observed, pondering if this might be linked to nutrient deficits.
Managing Hair Loss
Di Matto and Del Becchio suggest that clients consult their physicians to evaluate vitamin levels. They also recommend reducing hair care routines to lessen stress on the hair.
Salon recommendations include maintaining scalp health, minimizing heat exposure, and brushing hair gently from the ends up. “We emphasize scalp stimulation,” Di Matto said, adding that gentle treatments can significantly benefit overall hair condition. She mentioned that a cold rinse post-shampoo and careful handling of hair during styling can also help.
Rabito warns that hair loss is a common side effect of weight loss, advising that it’s essential for patients to be aware of this possibility at the start of their journey. He reassured patients that as weight stabilizes over time, the body will adjust, often leading to regrowth.
Many hair stylists recommend specialized hair vitamins to clients facing hair loss challenges during weight reduction. They advocate for using targeted shampoos and conditioners to combat thinning and support overall hair health.
Both Di Matto and Del Becchio emphasized that hair loss tends to be temporary, and that regeneration takes time. Del Becchio stated, “This is a sign of success for many. It’s a positive stress related to weight loss.”
Finally, Novo Nordisk, the company behind Ozempic and Wegovy, confirmed that hair loss is a potential side effect associated with semaglutide. Their spokesperson indicated that hair loss appeared in some clinical trials and noted it was more prevalent among those experiencing significant weight reductions. They maintain that patient safety is a priority and closely monitor safety reports to ensure proper treatment information is shared.
