Shane Lowry’s Difficult Day at Oakmont Country Club

Shane Lowry might not be featured in any promotional content for Oakmont Country Club after an eventful day on the course during the US Open. The 38-year-old from Ireland had a tough time, ranting in frustration as he played.

“Forget this place,” he exclaimed, reflecting his mood before accepting a bogey on the 14th hole. Oakmont is notorious for its challenging layout, and this year’s tournament was no exception.

Lowry ended up missing the cut, recording scores of 79 and 78 over 36 holes, joining other notable players who also didn’t make it, like Phil Mickelson and 2016 champion Dustin Johnson.

In contrast, Lowry performed much better in 2016, finishing tied for second place with an impressive 1-under score.

It’s clear this year hasn’t gone as planned for him. Rory McIlroy, for instance, struggled as well, bogeying five holes and posting three double bogeys to finish with a total of nine over on the first 18 holes.

During Thursday’s rounds, Rory’s frustration was also apparent when he was caught on microphone expressing his anger after failing to retrieve his ball from the rough.

On the following day, things didn’t improve for Lowry. While on the 14th hole, he experienced a lapse in judgment, picking up his ball without marking it first, which resulted in a one-stroke penalty. “This might be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done,” Lowry remarked with laughter, recalling how his caddy reacted in disbelief.

This recent performance follows his strong second-place finish in the Truist Championship just last month. Just before the tournament, he had acknowledged that Oakmont could be taxing.

“To be honest, I really struggled with the greens,” he explained. “I didn’t have the game I had going into the tournament, and it cost me.”

Currently, Sam Burns leads with a score of 3 under, while anyone looking to catch up will need to deal with some tough scores, including that of Scotty Scheffler, who is at four over.
