Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Injured in Protest Violence

This week, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Director Robert G. Luna sustained injuries during an incident where ten deputies were pelted with rocks, Molotov cocktails, and “high-quality fireworks.” Luna noted, “We’ve encountered some unusual weapons. There’s a significant distinction between peaceful protesters and those who come armed to attack our officers.”

During a press conference on Friday, he addressed the incidents following a week of protests and riots that began on June 6th. The focus of the conference was on upcoming national protests against the Trump administration, termed “No Kings,” scheduled for Saturday. Luna emphasized the right to protest, advocating for it to be conducted legally and justly.

“It’s important that while everyone has the right to demonstrate, we don’t want our officers or anyone being put in harm’s way by acts of violence or property destruction,” he added, cautioning against unsafe behavior by demonstrators. He mentioned that the California Highway Patrol would be present, highlighting ongoing risks authorities face.

Reports indicated that cities across the U.S. are gearing up for the planned demonstrations, which have gained traction from recent immigration-related protests. Notably, Saturday’s protest coincides with a military parade in Washington, D.C. where President Donald Trump is expected to be present for the Army’s 250th anniversary.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the LAPD is “fully prepared” for the anticipated large gatherings. “We will monitor the situation closely, redeploy personnel as needed, and ensure public safety while respecting the rights of individuals to protest peacefully,” he explained.

However, he also conveyed a stern warning, stating, “You will face arrest if you’re here intending to commit a crime or harm others, including law enforcement. We cannot allow anyone to disrupt lawful demonstrations with violence or vandalism. We urge those attending Saturday’s event to maintain peace and respect.”

Since protests began, hundreds of arrests have been made, and McDonnell highlighted that a curfew would be enforced over the weekend, which he believes has been vital in restoring order, given that many violent incidents occurred at night.

Additionally, California Highway Patrol troopers will be operating statewide alongside local police forces.
