Stu Holden on USMNT’s World Cup Preparation
Former USMNT player, Stu Holden, has highlighted a crucial aspect that teams must grasp ahead of the upcoming World Cup next year.
The 39-year-old emphasized the importance of knowing which players will take the field. “I think one of the biggest issues for USMNT is determining which 11 players will not only be on the pitch on June 12, 2026, but also those who can really inspire and deliver results,” he noted.
Holden believes that the future of the team hinges on a blend of talent and confidence. “That’s really the goal of our development. Given the investments we’ve made in soccer in this country, it’s time we achieve something we haven’t before,” he continued. He mentioned that this group shouldn’t just inspire belief in others but should also build their own self-confidence through consistent performances.
The USMNT faced disappointment in the 2022 World Cup, exiting in the round of 16. Selecting the right 11 for the next tournament is critical. Notably, Christian Pulisic, who many consider the team’s standout player, has yet to feature in the Gold Cup, a situation Holden regards as significant. “Every time the national team plays, I believe we need our best 23, and most importantly, the best 11 on the field,” he remarked.
He added that while Pulisic is vital for the team, Weston McKennie also stands out as a player to watch. “McKennie excites me; he possesses raw talent and is a natural athlete. I hope he can shoulder some responsibility in the forthcoming World Cup,” he said. “We can’t rely on just one great player.” During his tenure with USMNT from 2008 to 2013, Holden scored three goals.
The seasoned analyst, now with Fox Sports, expressed enthusiasm for the growing soccer culture in the US. “Having lived in LA for a decade, I’m thrilled to see how the football scene has developed since the World Cup was last hosted here in 1994,” he shared. “Also, I’ve got two young kids. I’m eager to introduce them to the sport in our backyard, showcasing the best players and teams, as that’s how we inspire the next generation.”
