The 2025 NBA Finals are underway, but trade discussions are already heating up. The Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic have finalized a significant deal aimed at elevating the Magic’s status in the Eastern Conference.
Orlando has acquired Desmond Bane from the Grizzlies, sending Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and four first-round picks, along with a pick swap, in return. Memphis has secured the 16th pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, a first-round pick from the Suns in 2026, and unprotected first-round picks in 2028 and 2030, plus a lightly protected swap in 2029.
While Bane hasn’t made an All-Star team, he has played at a high level for the past four years. He’s recognized as an excellent 3-point shooter, hitting 41% of his attempts on an average of 6.4 shots per game. Additionally, he excels defensively, able to guard both primary ball handlers and smaller wings. Bane will turn 27 before the next season begins.
The Magic are making bold moves to address critical weaknesses, while the Grizzlies are taking an unexpected step back. Let’s break down this trade from both perspectives.
Magic Trade Grade for Desmond Bane
This season, Orlando ranked among the worst shooting teams in NBA history, finishing with a team shooting percentage of just 31.8%. A lack of spacing hindered their offensive performance, resulting in a rating of 108.9, positioned 27th in the league. The situation worsened during their playoff series against the Boston Celtics, where their offensive rating dropped to 103.8.
Despite a 41-41 record, the Magic secured the No. 7 seed in the East, primarily due to their strong defense. This offseason, their aim was to improve their shooting without compromising their status as one of the best defensive teams. This trade could be a critical step toward achieving that balance.
Bane fits perfectly into what the Magic needs. He is not only an elite shooter but also a solid defender and a capable secondary ball handler. Orlando was in desperate need of players who can shoot consistently and contribute defensively.
Last season brought a slew of injuries for the Magic, with players like Wagner performing at an All-NBA level while trying to lead the team without Banchero. Although Banchero had standout performances early on, his scoring efficiency faltered. Meanwhile, Suggs, averaging 16.2 points per game, was sidelined after just 35 games due to knee surgery.
The Magic view both Wagner and Banchero as potential All-NBA talents, and while Suggs is regarded as one of the league’s top defensive guards, he’s starting to emerge offensively as well. Bane now adds the offensive spark this group desperately needed, giving them another guard to alleviate pressure and stay productive.
The integration of Bane into the Magic’s lineup seems promising. However, the price they paid raises some eyebrows.
Offering Phoenix’s 2026 first-round pick could be significant, and the unprotected picks in 2028 and 2030 present a risk if this roster doesn’t pan out as expected. Bane is certainly a valuable addition, but his lack of All-Star status makes it feel like a hefty cost.
With injuries impacting the Celtics and Bucks, the Magic see an opening in the Eastern Conference. This deal suggests they believe they can contend this season with Bane on board. It’s a bold move, but the talent on the roster might be enough to challenge the Cavaliers, Knicks, and Pacers atop the East, making a potential breakthrough within reach.

Grizzlies Trade Grade for Desmond Bane
The Grizzlies fell short of expectations this past season, struggling to maintain their position in the Western Conference. Following a rocky period, they even parted ways with their head coach after a swift first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It became clear Memphis needed to make changes, especially after the disappointing end to the season. Despite finishing with 48 wins, they fell short of the competition standards in the West, which made trading one of their top players a logical decision.
This trade allows the Grizzlies to reset and rebuild. Memphis has a strong history of successful drafting, leveraging three picks, including the solid 16th overall selection this year. Depending on their plans, the 2026 Suns pick could become a fruitful asset as well. Caldwell-Pope and Anthony are expected to help fill immediate needs this season.
It leaves the question: will the Grizzlies move players like Ja Morant or Jaren Jackson Jr.? There’s been speculation, although GM Zach Kleinman insists Morant is not on the trading block. Personally, I think Memphis can still be competitive next season with Caldwell-Pope and Anthony stepping in for Bane.
Ultimately, the Grizzlies couldn’t break through with their current core, so moving on might be the right call. Better to let go sooner rather than later.
