South Dakota on Alert After Shooting of Minnesota Lawmakers
South Dakota is currently on high alert as investigators intensify their search for the suspect involved in the shooting that resulted in the death of a Minnesota State Assembly member and left another lawmaker and his wife injured early Saturday.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota mentioned that authorities believe the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, may still be in Minnesota. They’re urging residents of South Dakota to remain vigilant.
Klobuchar stated, “There’s also a need for vigilance in South Dakota,” and added that the suspect is likely still in the Midwest.
Boelter is accused of shooting former Minnesota Senator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their Brooklyn Park residence on that Saturday morning. Additionally, Senator John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were shot and injured at their home, located about nine miles away in Chanhassen.
Later in the day, the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota informed that they found the suspect’s vehicle near Highway 25 and 301 Avenue in Faxon Township. However, despite that development, no suspects were located at the scene.
The sheriff’s office has advised residents to keep their doors locked and remain cautious.
Klobuchar also provided updates on Hoffman and his wife, noting that both were in a challenging state following “multiple gun wounds.” She said, “His wife hadn’t gone into surgery yet, and she actually reached out to some of our mutual friends. Hoffman might need additional surgery but is currently stable.”
Klobuchar cautioned the public against approaching Boelter, labeling him as dangerous.
“Now, everyone is aware, and this guy is clearly dangerous,” she remarked. “His writings and recent statements suggest he could harm others.”
Authorities have labeled the shooting as a targeted attack against lawmakers.
The FBI has released images of Boelter, showing him in a mask impersonating a police officer at one of the lawmakers’ homes. In another photo, he is seen wearing a tan cowboy hat shortly after the incident in a Minneapolis business.
Boelter has been placed on the FBI’s most wanted list, which includes a reward of up to $50,000 for any information leading to his capture and conviction.
