On Sunday, President Trump indicated that the United States might become directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran if tensions continue to escalate.
He suggested that both Iran and Israel would likely “contract” over the weekend to halt the significant violence unfolding, where missile exchanges have been rampant. However, Trump warned that the US could step in if a ceasefire does not happen.
“We’re not involved in that. We could be involved. But we’re not involved at this point,” Trump shared with ABC News.
He proposed that Russian President Vladimir Putin might play a role as a mediator between Israel and Iran, given that Russia has ties to both nations.
“He’s ready. He called me about it. We talked about it for a long time. We discussed this more than his situation,” referring to Putin’s war in Ukraine. “This is something I think I’m going to solve.”
In contrast to Trump’s statement about US non-involvement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut claimed in Tehran that Israel is “clearing the US agreement, support and attacks.”
“We have received messages from the US through various channels over the past two days, stating that we are not involved in the US and will not be involved in this attack,” he noted. “Like I said, we don’t believe in the US claims.”
As tensions rise between Israel and Iran, the US State Department announced it has authorized “voluntary departures of families and non-urgent US government officials” from Israel.
The State Department advised, “U.S. citizens who wish to leave should not delay their use of commercial transport options,” and emphasized that embassy shelter orders will remain in effect until further notice.
