Military Parade Sparks Mixed Reactions on MSNBC
MSNBC hosts Ali Velshi and Chris Hayes seemed taken aback by the military parade in Washington, DC on Saturday, remarking that it didn’t carry the “dark and evil energy” they anticipated. Hayes pointed out the irony, recalling their experiences at Trump rallies, and posed a thought-provoking question about the current tensions in the nation.
This military parade celebrated the 250th anniversary of the US Army and coincided with Trump’s 79th birthday. However, the event overshadowed ongoing protests in Los Angeles and other parts of the country against the Trump administration’s policies.
“It’s surprising, Chris. I saw so many people in the crowd, cheering, and even asking for selfies,” Velshi noted, highlighting the contrast in atmosphere.
Velshi acknowledged that while there was some politicization evident, it wasn’t heavy or tense. “Someone was walking around with signs and, at one point, a man shouted, ‘Trump 2028!’ I asked him how that would work, and he just laughed,” he shared, suggesting a lighthearted engagement.
Hayes remarked on the nationwide protests taking place and asked fellow host Jen Psaki about the country’s “citizen culture.” Psaki reflected on a sense of hope prevailing amidst the festivities, commenting on the strength of American civic and democratic culture.
Yet, she also mentioned that the overall calmness could shift depending on the tone of Trump’s speech during the parade.
“There are individuals attending today, perhaps for the first time, with their kids and even their elderly parents. It’s fascinating how these environments shape our perceptions,” she concluded, noting the unique blend of celebration and protest.
