South Carolina Teen Dies from Rare Infection

A 14-year-old from South Carolina has sadly passed away after contracting a rare bacterial infection, leading medical professionals to alert the public about the symptoms associated with it.

William Hand died on June 8 from a quick-moving blood infection known as Meningococcemia, just days after he first showed signs of illness. His father, Will Hand, shared that William woke up before 5 a.m. feeling unwell.

“Everything snowballed, and God called him home,” he expressed. “I will always remember Will with his flowing hair, big smile, and in his sports gear. I look forward to seeing you again, son.”

Meningococcemia, caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, entered William’s bloodstream, creating a rapid onset of symptoms. Dr. Anna-Kathryn Burch noted how swiftly the infection can develop, making it challenging to treat once it takes hold.

The disease spreads through saliva or respiratory secretions, often transferred between individuals through close contact or sharing items like drinks or utensils.

Burch clarified that although the disease is aggressive, it is relatively uncommon and not always fatal. Symptoms to watch for include high fever, severe headache, light sensitivity, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Additionally, it can provoke a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed.

“We call it a petechial rash because it resembles broken blood vessels under the skin,” she added. “If you press down on it, the rash remains visible.”

The South Carolina Department of Public Health recorded 12 cases of this infection in the last year and a half, with four resulting in fatalities. A spokesperson said that no links were found connecting these cases, which means it does not suggest an outbreak.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent Meningococcemia, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

William is remembered fondly as a vibrant individual who brought joy to those around him. His family described him as the “highlight of many people’s day,” embodying qualities of an athlete, comedian, music lover, and loyal friend.

“His loss leaves a void that can never be filled,” his obituary reflects. “He had an infectious smile, playful banter, and an extraordinary ability to turn ordinary moments into cherished memories.”

The Greenville Little League recognized him as “more than just a great competitor,” emphasizing his loyalty as a friend and brother. His spirit and love for baseball affected many lives, and he will be missed deeply.

A celebration of William’s life occurred on Friday, and his family requested that donations be made to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in place of flowers, as a thank you for the care he received in his last moments.
