Trey Yingst: Iran Lacks Choices
Chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst is set to deliver updates on the situation regarding missile strikes between Israel and Iran. This follows Israel’s targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities while intentionally avoiding strikes on key Iranian leaders and energy infrastructures.
The USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group is on its way from the South China Sea to the Middle East, according to sources. Initially, the Nimitz was meant to replace the USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, which has been active in the region but now finds itself deployed there longer than intended. Both groups will be present in the Middle East simultaneously.
As of last Friday, the USS Carl Vinson was the sole aircraft carrier in the area, according to statements from the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
Israel Claims Iranian Intelligence Leader in Tehran Killed
The USS Nimitz, the oldest active aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy, was commissioned on May 3, 1975. This could very well be its final operational cruise as the carrier is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2026. The Nimitz has a historical significance, particularly stemming from its deployment during Operation Eagle Claw in 1980, which aimed at rescuing American hostages in Tehran. Since that time, tensions and covert actions between the U.S. and Iran have continued.
This morning, the Nimitz departed from the South China Sea, heading westward. Reports indicate it was initially supposed to be in Da Nang, Vietnam, for a reception on June 20, but this was cancelled due to “urgent operational requirements” communicated by the U.S. embassy in Hanoi.
Military strategies are shifting, especially with Israel’s attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and subsequent retaliatory strikes in Iran that have persisted over four days.
Israeli Officials Denounce Trump’s Advocacy for Iranian Deal
With support from the U.S. air defense system and naval destroyers, Israel successfully intercepted ballistic missiles fired from Iran on Friday, as reported by U.S. officials. The United States currently has both Patriot missile defenses on land and high-altitude systems deployed in the Middle East capable of intercepting such missiles.
The USS Thomas Hudner, a destroyer equipped to counter ballistic missile threats, is moving from the western Mediterranean to assist as necessary. Another destroyer has been directed to be available should the White House require further military support.
U.S. fighter jets are actively patrolling the skies above the Middle East to protect personnel and installations while additional security measures are being implemented at air stations in the region. Typically, around 30,000 American troops are stationed in the Middle East, with that number increasing to about 40,000 currently due to rising tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as attacks from Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen targeting vessels in the Red Sea.
After the attacks by Hamas terrorists linked to Iran on October 7, 2023, former President Joe Biden boosted military presence to support Israel, which was largely seen as a deterrent against threats from Hezbollah and Iran.
On October 1, 2024, a U.S. Navy destroyer fired approximately 12 interceptors to defend Israel from a barrage of over 200 incoming missiles reportedly launched by Iran.
