Arkansas Pitcher Achieves No-Hitter in College World Series
Gage Wood, a standout pitcher from the University of Arkansas, accomplished a remarkable feat on Monday by throwing a no-hitter in the College World Series. This marked only the third occurrence of a no-hitter in the history of the series, and he managed to strike out a record-breaking 19 batters against Murray State, leading to a 3-0 win for his team.
With this achievement, Wood has joined an elite club, becoming one of the few pitchers to achieve a no-hitter in the CWS, following Jim Ehler from Texas in 1950 and Jim Wickson from Oklahoma in 1960.
Throughout the game, which lasted for 119 pitches, Wood displayed exceptional control, only having two instances where he faced three-ball counts. He was very close to completing a perfect game but hit a batter in the eighth inning, which he acknowledged. “I knew it was ruined when I hit the guy with my feet,” he remarked after the game.
Despite this minor blip, Wood celebrated his incredible performance. He seemed focused on the moment, stating, “The only special thing was that I didn’t want to go home. That’s all. We can play tomorrow night. But it’s pretty cool.” The junior right-hander, who experienced a shoulder injury earlier this season, managed to bounce back and make an impactful start, showcasing his resilience.
Additioanlly, after the game, Wood shared a sentimental moment when he handed the game ball to his father, wishing him a happy Father’s Day, which must have been a proud moment for both of them.
The Arkansas Razorbacks, with a record of 49-14, are set to face another elimination game against the winner of the upcoming match pitting LSU against UCLA.
