Joey Chestnut Returns to Hot Dog Competition

There’s a saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but for Joey Chestnut, it seems absence has left a hunger for competition. After a disagreement related to a sponsorship with a plant-based food company, he was unable to compete in last year’s famous Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. However, he’s making a comeback this Fourth of July.

This news was shared on Monday, where Major League Meals and Chestnut himself announced that he would return to the event after being out for over two weeks due to the previous conflict. It’s interesting to think about how big an event like this is for him and how his absence was probably felt.

In an interview, Chestnut remarked, “I think we probably learned from our mistakes.” He reflected on last year’s situation, where both sides were sticking firmly to their positions. He expressed concerns about working with a particular company, suggesting there were old contracts that didn’t sit well with him. They managed to find common ground this time around, emphasizing that open communication is essential to avoid further issues.

He noted how the discussions resumed and both parties came to understand each other’s perspectives. There hadn’t been any other brand deals complicating talks, which is kind of refreshing to hear, honestly. It seems like a collaborative approach was key this year.

Chestnut shared on social media that returning to Nathan’s was significant for him. He even conveyed a sense of frustration over missing last year’s contest, saying it felt overwhelming to just watch from the sidelines. It’s a bit surprising how much this truly affected him, but it makes sense; competitions like this are a big part of his identity.

Expressing his anticipation for this year, he said, “It makes you hungry. You have to go without anything to know how grateful you are for it. I’m definitely hungry this year.” It’s almost poetic, really—the thought of him being so motivated after a period of absence. He joked about being ready to consume a hot dog or two after two and a half weeks without one.

With Chestnut back, there’s buzz in the air as he aims to push the envelope and aim for the 80 hot dog mark. In 2023, he set the record with 76 hot dogs consumed, which is a huge achievement in itself. Last year, Patrick Bertoletti claimed victory in Chestnut’s absence by devouring 58 hot dogs and buns within ten minutes. So, it’ll be interesting to see how everything unfolds this year.
