Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Zack Cozart has been a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, who recently won the presidential race against former Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 election. However, Cozart’s backing seemed to waver amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, particularly when Trump suggested a large evacuation from Tehran.
In a post on X, Cozart stated, “If Trump had us in the war, I wouldn’t support him anymore, and I’m sure I know I love Trump.” This came as Trump was preparing to leave the G7 Summit in Canada due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
According to White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt, Trump had a successful day at the summit, signing a significant trade agreement with British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer. Still, because of the situation in the Middle East, he planned to depart alongside other leaders after dinner.
Trump has also expressed his desire for peace in the region, stating through a post on True Social, “make the Middle East great again.” As reported, he has requested that the National Security Council prepare upon his return.
Meanwhile, there were conflicting reports about U.S. troop involvement in an attack on Iran. White House spokesman Alex Pfeiffer clarified that the U.S. military remains on a defensive footing and is focused on protecting American interests.
Cozart, who played in Major League Baseball from 2011 to 2019, initially expressed his support for Trump ahead of last year’s Republican National Convention. He remarked, “I can’t wait to vote for Trump… I honestly have never seen the party united like it is now… They tried to kill our president… At least all we can do is vote!”
Drafted by the Reds in 2007, the Tennessee native played with the team until 2017 and finished his career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2018 and 2019. Notably, he was an All-Star in 2017, hitting 24 home runs and achieving a batting average of .297 with 63 RBIs.
Throughout his career, Cozart played in 839 games, with a .247 batting average, 87 home runs, and 305 RBIs, alongside a .300 on-base percentage and a .699 OPS.
