Bob Menendez Begins 11-Year Sentence After Corruption Conviction
Bob Menendez is about to enter a challenging phase of his life—his “golden” year will be spent in federal prison. The disgraced New Jersey Democrat was set to report to a facility in Pennsylvania, facing an 11-year sentence tied to a corruption scheme dubbed “Gold Barbob.”
At 71, Menendez was found guilty of misusing his influential Senate position for personal gain, which included receiving gold bars, cash, and other bribes. He was ordered to surrender at FCI Schuykill, located a couple of hours from his home in Englewood Cliffs, by 2:30 PM.
Though sentenced back in January, he managed to delay his imprisonment, arguing that he needed to support his wife, Nadine, who is facing similar bribery and corruption charges. He even attempted to secure a last-minute pardon or sentence commutation from President Trump, but unless the unexpected happens by Tuesday, Menendez will be calling the Keystone State prison his new residence.
The former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will likely occupy one of the lower-security spots in the facility, which houses around 225 male inmates. This setting provides more freedom and a less restrictive environment compared to others.
Within FCI Schuykill, there are nearly 1,000 additional inmates in a medium-security section. Once inside, Menendez will have the option to buy various items from the commissary, like $8.55 head-and-shoulders shampoo and $4.20 Jolly Ranchers. According to prison regulations, he can also have four visits each month and send and receive letters and postcards.
Despite his fall from grace, Menendez may not be the most notorious inmate there. Another well-known resident includes Garmeat Shindinsa, a former gas station mogul dubbed “Gas Station Gotti,” who was convicted of orchestrating a murder to execute a deceptive plot against customers.
Menendez, who once oversaw significant military aid approvals, was convicted in a Manhattan federal trial on July 16, 2024, for bribery and for acting as an illegal foreign agent in dealings with Egypt and Qatar. He was found guilty of receiving benefits from a foreign government, including cash, gold bars, and luxury cars, and even for being involved in fictitious jobs and a sham consulting firm.
The FBI uncovered a staggering $486,471 in cash throughout Menendez’s home, including within his official government jacket. Additionally, investigators found 13 gold bars valued at around $150,000 hidden in their bedroom safe.
During sentencing, Judge Sidney Stein expressed regret, saying, “I’m sorry because somewhere along the way, you became a corrupt politician.” Meanwhile, Nadine Menendez, 58, is also set to be sentenced in September for her role in the scheme. She was spotted recently near their home, seemingly running errands, perhaps awaiting the next chapter in this ongoing saga.
