Red Sox Trade Rafael Devers: David Ortiz Responds

Monday brought some intriguing commentary from baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz regarding the Boston Red Sox’s decision to trade Rafael Devers. The Sox traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for four players, which included Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks. This trade wrapped up a sequence of events that began when Boston signed Alex Bregman and stirred up complexities between Devers and the team.

Boston’s attempt to shift Devers from third base created friction, especially when Triston Casas got injured. Devers was quite resistant to the idea of moving. Ultimately, Manager Alex Cora designated him as a designated hitter.

The situation escalated, leading to Devers being traded, as Ortiz noted in an interview. He indicated that Devers’ circumstances weren’t handled effectively, suggesting a lack of mature communication on both sides. Ortiz reflected on his own experiences with the Red Sox, saying, “Do you think everything was perfect for me? I’ve faced challenges too.” He emphasized the importance of maturity in resolving issues, likening it to family dynamics where understanding is key.

Ortiz also highlighted the power dynamics within an organization, mentioning, “I understand that communication wasn’t the best early on; however, teams can make decisions that go beyond individual feelings.” He suggested that young players often struggle to grasp this reality. “The organization can trade or release you whenever they choose. What really matters is how you perform on the field,” he concluded.

In terms of performance, Devers showcased solid numbers, finishing with a batting average of .272, an OPS of .905, and hitting 15 home runs, which made him a standout in the American League with 56 RBIs while playing the most games in the majors.
