Large Russian Airstrike in Ukraine Results in 15 Deaths and 156 Injuries

Kiev, Ukraine – Casualties from Recent Attacks

Local officials reported that 15 people lost their lives and 156 were injured due to Russian missile strikes and Ukraine’s drone bombings, as confirmed on Tuesday.

Among the casualties, at least 14 were reported dead, with explosions reverberating through Kyiv for nearly nine hours, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the principal of the city’s military junta.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on Kyiv as “one of the most horrifying strikes” the capital has faced, citing that Russia unleashed over 440 drones and 32 missiles.

The Ukrainian Home Ministry noted that 139 individuals sustained injuries in the capital. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko announced plans for an official day of mourning.

This assault occurred following two failed rounds of direct peace negotiations to end the ongoing war, which has now entered its fourth year.

The UN has reported that more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have died due to repeated Russian attacks on civilian areas, although Russia insists it only targets military sites.

In recent months, Russia has intensified its aerial assaults. Just on June 10th, nearly 500 drones were launched in Ukraine, marking the largest drone bombing throughout the conflict. Earlier, on April 24, another strike on Kyiv resulted in at least 12 fatalities.

The escalated long-range attacks are occurring alongside Russian summer offensives in the eastern and northeastern sections of the front, located about 1,000 kilometers away.

Concerns regarding U.S. policy in the conflict have raised questions about how dependable support for Kyiv might be. Zelenskyy was set to meet with President Trump at Canada’s G7 Summit to seek further assistance, but Trump abruptly returned to Washington due to escalating Middle Eastern tensions.

Zelenskyy has urged that Ukraine not be sidelined in international diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Trump recently suggested that perhaps it would be better for Ukraine to “fight for a while” before seeking a resolution with Russia, a notion opposed by European leaders, who are pressing for a ceasefire.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov disclosed that the timeline for the next round of talks remains uncertain.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikh criticized the Russian assault during the G7 summit, calling it a clear display of Putin’s “complete disrespect” towards the United States and its allies.

Sibikh remarked that, rather than engage in ceasefires or diplomatic discussions, Russia continues to launch attacks on Kyiv while pretending to seek peaceful resolutions.

Ukrainian forces have managed to retaliate using domestically-produced long-range drones. In contrast, the Russian military claims to have downed 203 Ukrainian drones across 10 regions between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

Rosaviatia, Russia’s civil aviation authority, reported that flights were temporarily grounded overnight at airports in Kalga, Tambov, and Nizhny Novgorod.

According to regional government head Ole Kipper, a recent Russian drone strike on Odesa, a southern port city, resulted in one death and 17 injuries.

Zelenskyy noted Putin’s continued aggression reflects a desire for relentless warfare, suggesting that the inaction of the global community is frustrating.

Statements from the Kiev junta confirmed that the attacks had resulted in direct hits on residential buildings, with one report describing rockets striking from upper floors to the basements.

A U.S. citizen was among those who died from injuries sustained during the assault, as stated by Home Minister Ihol Klimenko during a press briefing.

Klimenko indicated that 30 apartments were struck by ballistic missiles, completely destroying part of a residential block.

“There are currently around 2,000 personnel, including rescuers, police, and medical staff, responding to 27 different attack locations,” he mentioned while at the scene of one strike.

Witness Olena Lapyshniak, 49, shared her experience of a devastating strike that nearly destroyed her home. She recounted hearing whispers followed by two explosions that shattered windows and doors.

She expressed, “It’s terrifying; life can disappear in an instant. There’s no military presence here. Nothing at all. The thought of people dying at night is frightening.”

Casualties were reported in the Sviatsinsky and Solomiansky districts of the city, and debris from Ukrainian defenses ignited fires in two other urban areas.

Moscow’s recent escalation followed a daring attack on June 1, targeting warplanes at an air force base deep within Russian territory.
