Rep. Thomas Massey Proposes Bipartisan Resolution on Military Action in Iran
Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massey has put forward a bipartisan resolution aimed at preventing U.S. military involvement in unauthorized conflicts with Iran. This announcement comes as tensions rise regarding the potential for U.S. engagement in military actions in the region.
Massey, who identifies as leaning towards libertarianism, has often spoken out about America’s role in foreign wars. He emphasized that the founding fathers believed Congress should have the authority to declare war, making it clear that any military action should be subject to legislative approval.
“This is not our war, but if that is the case, Congress must decide such matters according to our constitution. I must introduce this bipartisan war power resolution to ban our involvement,” Massey stated.
In his first post regarding the bill, Massey mentioned its co-sponsors and referenced Articles 1 and 8 of the U.S. Constitution, emphasizing that only Congress holds the power to declare war.
The resolution also notes that if U.S. troops are involved in hostilities outside U.S. territory without the proper authorization, they must be removed at the President’s direction.
If the resolution passes, it will direct the President to terminate the use of U.S. military forces against Iran.
The initiative was co-introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna and supported by 14 other members of the House.
Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib responded to the announcement, expressing her support for the resolution. She pointed out the need for Congress to ensure that American forces are not deployed without proper legislative oversight, especially given past actions that were viewed as unconstitutional.
As this resolution is introduced, there are growing concerns regarding the U.S. military’s increasing presence in the Middle East, with reports of warships being dispatched to the region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at the possibility of a broader strategy that includes dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
In addition to Massey and Khanna, several other representatives, including well-known figures, are backing the resolution. This initiative underscores the ongoing debate in Congress over U.S. military involvement overseas and the need for clearer legislative guidelines.
