Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Forms Task Force on Slavery Reparations

Brandon Johnson, Chicago’s Democratic mayor, has revealed a new task force focusing on reparations aimed at the city’s black community, even as he grapples with low approval ratings.

In June, Johnson announced this task force, seeking a solution to his approval woes. Reports indicate that a budget allocation of $500,000 has been set aside for its work, as mentioned by WFLD-TV.

The divided mayor has claimed that “investment in black people is not a crime.”

“The Task Force will carry out a thorough examination of policies that have adversely affected Black Chicagoans since slavery, crafting recommendations for possible remedies,” City Hall stated in a June 17th announcement.

“This executive order is not merely symbolic; it’s a commitment to address the long-standing inequality in our city,” Johnson remarked, despite his dwindling popularity.

“Collaborating with the Chicago City Council’s Black Caucus and other allies, we aim to reinforce my administration’s efforts by focusing on targeted investments to amend decades of neglect in black neighborhoods,” he continued.

“These actions reflect my administration’s commitment to accountability, and I appreciate your steadfast dedication.”

The task force will investigate housing subsidies for black residents, foster economic growth for black-owned businesses, and evaluate the creation of racially-focused health, education, and safety initiatives. Public hearings will be conducted to gather testimonies regarding the “harm” sustained over the years. Johnson has stated that his initiative will also act as a city-wide reeducation campaign.

It’s still uncertain how Johnson could legitimately advocate for tax policies favoring black residents without excluding others.

Critics like 38th Ward Alderman Nick Sposato argue that the $500,000 could be better spent on less divisive programs. He expressed concern, saying, “This is too divisive; it could further split us apart. I doubt the fairness of this approach. Perhaps the task force will conclude it’s unnecessary, but I remain very skeptical.”

Johnson’s approval rating among the black community has reportedly dropped to about 30%, according to a recent poll by the 2040 Strategy Group. Additionally, 28% of respondents completely disapprove of his leadership, while 43% have mixed views.

Many in the black community feel at odds with Johnson, primarily due to his high-cost support for undocumented immigrants and the perceived shift away from addressing the needs of their community.
