Mariska Hargitay Reveals Shocking Truth About Her Mother’s Car Accident

Mariska Hargitay, known for her role in “Law & Order: SVU,” has uncovered startling information regarding her mother, Jayne Mansfield’s deadly car accident.

During the production of her documentary, “My Mom Jayne,” Hargitay spoke with her brother, Zoltan, who informed her that he accidentally left something at the site of the 1967 accident that claimed their mother’s life, along with Mansfield’s boyfriend, Sam Brody, and their driver, Ronald B. Harrison.

In the unfortunate incident, Jayne Mansfield, Brody, and Harrison occupied the front seats, while Mariska, Zoltan, and older brother Mickey were asleep in the back. Zoltan mentioned how their mother came to the front seat during his conversation with Brody. He posed a reflection in the film: “Do you think twice about why she didn’t stay in the back seat with us?”

He recalled vividly comforting moments with his mother before the chaos unfolded. “I could hear her screams so loudly after what felt like 20 or 30 minutes.” Prior to the tragedy, the group was en route from Biloxi, Mississippi, to New Orleans for Mansfield’s television appearance. A nearby mosquito spray truck created a thick mist, contributing to the crash when their vehicle collided with a slower-moving 18-wheeler.

Tragically, the adults in the front seat died instantly, while the children miraculously survived.

Mickey, who was just eight years old at the time, described waking up after the crash and mistakenly believing he saw Mansfield in the front seat. “My skin felt like it was not moving,” he recounted. When the woman turned around, he realized she was not his mother but another blonde woman who helped save the children.

When Zoltan awoke, it quickly dawned on him that Mariska, only three at the time, was missing from their group. He asked an adult where she was, only to find out she was still at the crash site. Harugitay had been pulled to safety, though initially overlooked due to hiding under the passenger seat from a head injury. Their stepmother, Ellen Hargitay, expressed gratitude for Zoltan’s alertness in discovering Mariska was missing.

“Thank God for Zory’s awakening,” Ellen said.

The documentary, “My Mother Jane,” premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 13, following its introduction at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. In an earlier interview, Hargitay shared that directing the film was part of her healing process related to her mother’s death.

“I don’t remember the accident or even being told my mother had died,” she reflected. “Everything feels like a blank until I was five.”

Furthermore, Hargitay revealed to Vanity Fair that her biological father is Nelson Saldelli, a former Las Vegas performer. She and Zoltan were raised by the late Mickey Hargitay, a well-known actor and bodybuilder. In 1963, Mansfield initiated divorce proceedings from Mickey, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. Later, she became romantically involved with Saldelli, although she reconciled with Mickey shortly before Mariska’s birth.

Mariska noted her long-held suspicions about Mickey not being her biological dad. It wasn’t until her twenties that seeing Saldelli’s photo confirmed her doubts.

At thirty, Hargitay met her biological father for the first time while attending one of his performances in Atlantic City, eventually forming a connection with Saldelli and his daughters.

Born as Vera Jane Palmer, Mansfield was a promising actress who spoke multiple languages and played musical instruments. Adjusting her appearance to resemble Marilyn Monroe led to a Hollywood persona that was both celebrated yet often underestimated as a serious actress.

Describing her complexities, Hargitay remarked to Vanity Fair, “When I heard that fake voice, it just turned me over… My dad always said, ‘She wasn’t at all like that. She was funny, profane, fearless, and authentic.’

“My Mother Jane” is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on June 27.
