Chicago Mayor Voices Opposition to Federal Immigration Forces

Chicago’s Mayor, Brandon Johnson, expressed concerns on Monday regarding the potential deployment of federal forces in his city, a move linked to former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. He described it as unconstitutional and suggested it could face legal challenges.

During a press conference at city hall, Johnson referred to the initiative as a threat to civil liberties and local governance. This came after reports indicated the federal government plans to enhance immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities such as Chicago.

“This is another example of his Animus workers,” Johnson remarked. “It’s crucial for the President to honor the Constitution. If he were to consult city leaders, it is evident he lacks interest in that.”

In light of the ongoing developments, Johnson has rallied Chicagoans to stand up against what he termed the “terrorism” of immigration enforcement. He emphasized that the city has welcomed more than 51,000 immigrants since August 2022, many arriving via transportation from Texas facilitated by Governor Greg Abbott’s relocation efforts.

The mayor’s strong sentiments followed remarks from Trump administration officials about Chicago’s recent protests and urban sanctuary policies. An official stated, “The President is prepared to demonstrate that no one is above the law.” Johnson’s response was resolute: “We will continue to resist through the courts, on the streets, or via public policy—we will defend our workers.”

Johnson’s comments were echoed by city corporate lawyer Mary Richardson Laurie, who underscored the constitutional limitations on such military actions, asserting, “Deploying military powers is a violation of the Constitution unless it pertains to national security.”

This tension follows a recent hearing where Illinois Governor JB Pritzker defended the state’s sanctuary policies before Congress, highlighting the official state’s commitment to protecting immigrant rights.

The mayor’s office did not provide an immediate response when approached for comments.
