Senate Passes Bipartisan Cryptocurrency Bill

The Senate recently approved a landmark bipartisan cryptocurrency regulation known as the Genius Law, following extensive negotiations between Democrats and Republicans. The final vote stood at 68-30, which included support from 18 Democrats and two Republican votes.

This bill is now headed to the House for further consideration. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer has urged the relevant financial services committee to push the stablecoin legislation through by the end of July.

The Genius Act is designed to regulate Stablecoin, a specific cryptocurrency tied to the US dollar. Despite a general consensus that regulatory measures are necessary, there has been some tension regarding its implications for President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency activities.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a prominent figure on the Senate Banking Committee, has repeatedly cautioned that the legislation lacks sufficient safeguards for Stablecoins, suggesting it could potentially fuel corruption.

Similarly, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has expressed concern over the need for stricter ethical standards, as he previously mentioned to a CNN correspondent.

On the other hand, GOP Senator Bill Hagerty, one of the primary supporters of the bill, contended that “the law is agnostic when it comes to companies and people.”

“This essentially positions the United States in a strong position for digital payments,” Hagerty stated to reporters back in May. “It’s about consumer protection, payment currency, and maintaining control over the dollar and Treasury.”

Initially, the Senate struggled to advance the legislation after Democrats withheld support due to worries regarding Trump’s cryptocurrency arrangements. However, further bipartisan efforts have led to a revised amendment that has garnered significant backing among Democrats, facilitating progress for the bill.
