Variation in Leadership Styles: A Look at Musk and Becent

Treasury Secretary Scott Becent and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk recently discussed their differing approaches to business, framing their disagreements as a simple matter of stylistic contrast. They described themselves as quick-moving innovators—akin to agile ninjas—focused on effecting change in their respective fields.

In April, tensions between them escalated during a heated confrontation. Steve Bannon, a commentator, claimed that Musk physically confronted Becent, leading to a dramatic scene.

“We had our disagreements, but ultimately we share the same goals,” Becent noted in a conversation with Miranda Devine on her podcast. He emphasized their mutual objective of reducing waste and inefficiency in government.

Becent elaborated on his more methodical approach compared to Musk’s fast-paced, risk-taking style, saying, “I always aim to be deliberate at the Treasury, while Elon probably sees himself as a Viking. I prefer to think of myself as a ninja.” This reflects their contrasting philosophies in handling issues.

In the public eye, Becent defended Musk’s cost-cutting initiative, which had faced significant scrutiny. However, he privately expressed skepticism regarding some of Musk’s more ambitious statements and acknowledged a challenging interaction between them.

Earlier this year, both men lobbied for leadership candidates at the IRS, with Becent’s choice supported by former President Trump. Following this meeting, conflicts arose, leading to a tense exchange, during which Bannon claimed that Becent accused Musk of being a fraud, and he had to separate them.

At a recent Congressional hearing, Becent described reports of this confrontation as “fake news,” even as he wrestled with whether he had genuinely challenged one of the world’s wealthiest figures.

Despite their clashes, he later offered a more conciliatory perspective on Musk, saying, “Elon has faced significant media backlash and public scrutiny. I think this situation might be putting him under undue stress.” He likened the concept of DOGE to a spirit, suggesting that, despite Musk’s departure, its essence would continue to create meaningful impact over time.

Musk officially ended his role as a special government employee last month, and despite some tough criticism from Trump, Becent noted that the discussions between them were more constructive than confrontational.

After Trump’s successful 2024 campaign, Musk backed former Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, who later led the Treasury under Becent. In reflecting on the passionate dynamics at play, Becent remarked, “Everyone is keen to do their best for President Trump and the American public.”
