Crypto Hack Involving Iranian Exchange
Israeli hacker groups reportedly took over $90 million from Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange on Wednesday. Interestingly, it appears they might have lost all the proceeds from this operation.
Digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin were taken from the wallet of Nobitex, which is the main exchange in Iran. The IRGC, an arm of Iran’s military forces, is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the US and Canada.
Notably, the stolen assets were traced to wallets that contained messages opposing Iran, particularly directed at the IRGC. These messages included variations of a rather explicit phrase against the group.
According to crypto tracking firms like Elliptic and TRM Lab, the hackers ended up essentially discarding their loot into the digital ether. “They likely didn’t possess a private key for the crypto address they sent it to, which means they essentially burned those funds to send a political statement,” Elliptic explained in a statement.
This cyberattack seems to have been timed to coincide with ongoing missile exchanges between Iran and Israel, which have been escalating for a sixth consecutive day.
The hacking group known as Gonjescheke Dalande, which identifies as pro-Israel and styles itself as the predatory Sparrow, has claimed responsibility for the attack. They also hinted at potentially releasing the code linked to Nobitex, although this code hasn’t been published yet, as it’s not directly tied to the attack.
Additionally, the predatory Sparrow claimed another cyberattack directed at Iran’s state-owned Bank Sepa this week, supposedly targeting bank services tied to IRGC members.
In a related note, President Trump stated that he has already run out of patience with Iran, although he did not confirm whether the US would intervene militarily in the conflict with Israel.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had previously warned that any US intervention would bring about “irreparable damage.”
An investigation showed possible links between ransomware operators associated with the IRGC and figures close to Khamenei, raising questions about the integrity of such exchanges.
Nobitex, which claims over 7 million users, remains a significant player in Iran’s cryptocurrency landscape.
