Red Sox were unable to acquire Giants' best prospect in Rafael Devers trade

Rafael Devers Joins the Giants

The Boston Red Sox made a significant move, trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

According to a report, Boston’s management pushed for a deal that would have included 20-year-old prospect Bryce Eldridge. However, the Giants were not willing to part with him.

As a result, the Red Sox received Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbetts III, and Jose Bello in exchange for Devers, who is a three-time All-Star.

MLB Pipeline ranks Eldridge as the Giants’ top prospect and 19th overall in baseball. This season, he has maintained a .251/.323/.474 batting line with ten home runs during his time in Double-A and Triple-A.

Buster Posey, the Giants’ president of baseball operations, mentioned that Devers wouldn’t hinder Eldridge’s growth. “We see their development pathways as aligned,” Posey stated. He seems optimistic about Eldridge’s future potential.

After a rocky ending in Boston, where Devers was reluctant to play first base due to disagreements with the front office, he has reportedly changed his mindset. He expressed a willingness to contribute to the Giants wherever needed.

Devers mentioned, “They’re the ones calling the shots,” when referring to the Giants’ front office and coaches. He seems focused on adapting to his new role.

In his debut, Devers batted third in the lineup, achieving two hits, including a double and an RBI.

Manager Bob Melvin indicated that Devers would likely split his time between designated hitter and first base going forward.

During a press conference marking his new chapter, Devers avoided discussing his Boston past. Instead, he emphasized his eagerness to embrace his role with the Giants.
