House Speaker Criticizes Chicago Mayor on Immigration Policies

House Speaker Mike Johnson has spoken out against Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, claiming that the mayor is “on the wrong side of the law” for opposing federal immigration enforcement.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “American Newsroom,” Johnson expressed concerns about the challenges faced by local law enforcement in a city that he describes as “deep blue.” He noted that officers are overwhelmed with the demands of tracking down “dangerous, criminal, and illegal foreigners” and emphasized that this situation is harming American citizens. Johnson expressed disbelief at the mayor’s stance, calling it “insanity.”

On the other hand, Mayor Johnson, alongside Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, has vocalized objections to Trump’s immigration enforcement strategies. He stated that while ICE activity resumes in cities nationwide, it remains to be seen how extensive this enforcement will be in Chicago. Johnson criticized the federal government’s approach, arguing that it targets individuals who are contributing to society by paying taxes.

The mayor also emphasized his intention to resist any federal troops deployed for immigration enforcement, saying, “We’ll continue to resist,” whether that happens through legal actions, public demonstrations, or policy changes. He maintains that the city will stand up for its workers.

Recently, reports indicated that Chicago has seen an influx of over 51,000 illegal immigrants since last August, which has added pressure on local resources.

On a related note, Johnson highlighted ongoing legislation that aims to secure additional funding for border enforcement while also proposing new benefits for front-line immigration enforcement agents. The Speaker believes it’s vital to ensure that law enforcement can effectively manage the situation and remove individuals who pose risks to community safety.

Overall, the ongoing discussion around immigration policies in Chicago reflects broader national tensions about enforcement strategies and local governance.
