Florida Democrat Advocates for Citizenship Path for Illegal Immigrants
Maxwell Frost, a Democrat from Florida, is pushing for a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S.
At a press conference in Central Florida, Frost, who is part of the progressive wing of the House Democrats, emphasized that immigrants without legal status should not be marginalized. His call for a sweeping pardon comes even as many Americans express support for the Biden administration’s deportation initiatives. Recent polling shows a significant number of people backing these measures.
“I want to be clear,” Frost stated during the press event. “There are undocumented people in this country who do not deserve to be treated as less than.” He advocates for a comprehensive approach to address their situation.
As of 2022, it was estimated that over 11 million undocumented immigrants lived in the United States, according to the Pew Research Center. This figure may have increased given the surge in border crossings observed during Joe Biden’s presidency.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has criticized Frost’s position, suggesting that his comments could play to Republican advantages in upcoming mid-term elections. “Maxwell Frost just vocalized what many Democrats think: they aim to change our country fundamentally with a mass pardon for all undocumented immigrants,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella remarked. He added that this stance contributes to a lack of voter trust.
A June survey indicated that less than 20% of voters in competitive districts supported how Democrats were managing immigration, with 58% having a negative view of their approach.
During the press conference, Florida Democrats also outlined new requirements for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and criticized ICE’s role in executing the administration’s deportation strategy, labeling their actions as “terrorism in our community.”
Frost called for ICE agents to resign, likening their activities to some of humanity’s gravest injustices. “We need to confront ICE. The actions they’re carrying out are justifiable for some of the worst crimes in history, not just in our nation but around the world,” he said.
Frost’s stance aligns with several other House Democrats advocating for more progressive immigration policies. Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been vocal in her calls for the abolition of ICE, while fellow Democrat Becca Ballint criticized deportation efforts, arguing that without immigrant labor, many essential tasks would go unaddressed.
However, a number of Democratic lawmakers have adjusted their rhetoric since the party’s struggles at the polls last November. For instance, Michigan’s Senator suggested in May that criminal illegal immigrants should be deported.
A spokesperson for Maxwell Frost did not respond to inquiries for further comments.
