Volpe Reflects on Error in Yankees’ Loss to Angels
Anthony Volpe acknowledged his mistake after the Yankees’ recent game, which ended a five-game winning streak. It was a tight match on Wednesday night, tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning with the bases loaded when Joe Adele hit a grounder. Volpe, positioned at shortstop, fumbled the ball and made an errant throw that allowed the Angels to take the lead, ultimately defeating the Yankees 3-2.
After the game, Volpe shook his head, clearly frustrated. “I need to be more decisive. Just get the ball and make the play,” he noted, reflecting on the critical error. “That’s the first step.”
Manager Aaron Boone shared his thoughts, mentioning how the ball appeared to take an unexpected bounce. “I haven’t seen the replay yet, but it definitely caught us off guard,” he said regarding the play.
Interestingly, Volpe, who was awarded the Gold Glove earlier this year, faced off against Angels pitcher Kenley Jansen with a chance to tie the game but struck out, finishing the night with four at-bats and three strikeouts. Remarkably, he’s batted 18-1 over his last five games.
Boone, while acknowledging the pressure of the moment, seemed optimistic about Volpe’s overall performance. “He’s been doing well lately. I think he’s getting into a groove, and it’s just about maintaining that,” Boone explained. “Sure, tonight wasn’t his best, but he’ll bounce back.”
Despite this stumble, Volpe’s season has seen him successfully steal eight bases, showcasing a different aspect of his game that’s been a strong point for him in the past. It’s a mixed bag, really—some highs and lows—but you can sense he’s eager to improve and learn from each experience.
