US Consideration of UNIFIL Mandate Amid Hezbollah’s Activities
JERUSALEM – The UN mission facing scrutiny for its inability to curtail Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel is awaiting a decision from the Trump administration by late August regarding its mandate at the UN Security Council.
In a recent discussion, U.S. government officials and experts in Israel criticized UNIFIL (the UN Interim Force in Lebanon) for demonstrating inefficiency in tackling Hezbollah’s operations, which are supported by Iran. David Friedman, who served as the U.S. ambassador during the Trump administration, remarked on the organization’s glaring failures, emphasizing that, despite its mission to prevent Hezbollah from gaining ground after the 2006 war, the group has only grown stronger.
Since the Second Lebanon War, UN Security Council resolution 1701 has attempted to maintain peace. However, tense dynamics escalated after the recent invasion of Israel by a terrorist faction tied to Iran on October 7, 2023, resulting in significant loss of life, including over 1,200 individuals and several Americans.
Reports have highlighted that UNIFIL troops have not managed to halt the growth of Hezbollah’s arsenal since their deployment in 2006. The U.S. ambassador to Israel at the time criticized Hezbollah for not fulfilling its responsibilities in inhibiting military buildup near Israel’s borders.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) uncovered a military site filled with explosives close to the border during their operations in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Jonathan Haronov, Israel’s international UN representative, indicated that Israel is still evaluating the ongoing mission of UNIFIL.
A U.S. State Department official conveyed that there is currently no update on the matter of continuing UNIFIL’s mission. Experts from the Alma Research and Education Centre, notable for analyzing UNIFIL and Hezbollah, suggested that UNIFIL has missed many opportunities to operate effectively, particularly after repeated warnings from Israel.
Defending UNIFIL’s relevance, spokesperson Andrea Teneti highlighted the force’s role in regional stability, asserting their continued support for Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and community aid, despite ongoing tensions.
Critiques have been directed at UNIFIL’s effectiveness in disarming Hezbollah, with calls for more tangible evidence of success. Residents like Zehavi, living in northern Israel and directly impacted by Hezbollah’s attacks, demanded to see proof of any disarmament efforts undertaken by UNIFIL.
The conversation around the future of UNIFIL is clouded by complex geopolitics, including a recent ceasefire brokered between Hezbollah and Israel, which aims for long-term stability. Yet, challenges remain, as Hezbollah’s influence within the Lebanese military complicates the peace efforts.
As deliberations continue, the pressures faced by both the U.S. and Israeli governments underscore the urgency of addressing Hezbollah’s capabilities and the broader implications for regional security.
