June Holiday Reflection
Every year, June seems to be inching closer to becoming a recognized federal holiday, with markets closing and people taking a breather. But just because you don’t have to clock in at work doesn’t mean the struggle against racism is on pause. It’s not like you can just count on someone like Kamala Harris to handle everything. I mean, there are whispers that she’s still reeling from some wedding festivities.
So, it falls on all of us to take action against white supremacy this June. Thankfully, there are some suggestions out there—one notable source being the Black Lives Matter Grassroots Organization.
Make amends financially
One of the most straightforward approaches to combat racism might be through reparations. Forget about sending Venmo transfers or writing checks. I’m talking about real cash here. Honestly, it doesn’t matter if your family struggled as Irish immigrants or if you’ve got a historical connection to Robert E. Lee. If you’re not prepared to hand over at least $500 to your Black friends this June, you might have some soul-searching to do.
Offer to help out
If you’re tight on funds, that’s okay. There are other ways to contribute. Maybe washing a neighbor’s car could be a start—it’s an honest gesture of goodwill, after all. Sure, it might not be ideal, but we get it, and who wouldn’t appreciate a shiny ride?
Clean up the common areas
If your Black neighbor doesn’t own a car, consider sprucing up their front porch. It’s hot outside, but that doesn’t mean community bonding is sidelined. Keeping things tidy is key, and cleaning up is just one way to show you care. With each sweep, think of it as clearing away a bit of that old white supremacy.
Avoid the BBQ corner
Have you heard about the cookout? Let’s not even dive into that topic—just steer clear.
For Latinos: Mind your language
Using the n-word is strictly off-limits unless you belong to specific groups—like Black individuals or certain rappers. If you don’t fit the criteria, it’s probably best to skip that word altogether. It may get you in hot water, so be mindful.
Note of Interest
The spotlight this June might ironically be on Senator Ted Cruz. His understanding of specific populations leaves much to be desired, as he seems focused on less pressing matters. But hey, congratulations are in order for him!
It’s essential to reflect on the past while striving for a better future.
