Karen Reed Acquitted in Officer’s Death

On Wednesday, Karen Reed, a woman from Massachusetts, was found not guilty of the charges related to the death of her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, in 2022. While she was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter, she was convicted on drunk driving charges and is set to face a year of probation.

This verdict marks a significant triumph for Reed’s attorney, who has long maintained that she was unjustly framed by law enforcement after she dropped off John O’Keefe at a party hosted by a fellow officer. Prosecutors had claimed that Reed ran O’Keefe over in an SUV, but the defense argued that he was actually killed inside the house and then moved outside.

The jury’s decision came after a lengthy deliberation period, which had included previous uncertainties about Reed’s role in O’Keefe’s January 2022 death.

Friends of O’Keefe expressed their dismay at the ruling, calling it “unfortunate.” One of them remarked, “If she had made different choices between 12:30 am and 6 am, he might still be here.”

Reed’s defense contended that O’Keefe had been bitten by a dog and left a house in Canton due to a conspiracy involving the police. Conversely, prosecutors painted a picture of Reed as someone who made a reckless decision that resulted in O’Keefe’s death.

Court documents revealed that the couple had a strained relationship leading up to that night. Notably, an emergency responder recounted that Reed had been found beside O’Keefe, who was lying in the snow, repeatedly stating, “I hit him. I hit him.” The defense accused police of providing misleading testimony to the court.

In terms of O’Keefe’s demise, prosecutors cited the autopsy’s findings, which indicated that blunt force trauma and hypothermia were the causes of death. They noted that there were no evident signs of a physical struggle.

After the verdict was announced, video footage captured the reaction of a crowd outside the courtroom, illustrating a mix of emotions in response to the outcome.

In the aftermath, a group of O’Keefe’s acquaintances condemned the ruling as a “catastrophic miscarriage of justice,” highlighting that some potential suspects were not adequately investigated in connection with his death.
