Dennis Santana of the Pirates gets into a confrontational incident with a fan in the bullpen

Tensions escalated during the second game of a doubleheader between the Pirates and the Tigers on Thursday at Comerica Park in Chicago, especially after the Pirates’ fans arrived. The Pirates ended up winning this game 8-4, but not before a bit of drama unfolded with pitcher Dennis Santana.

Santana, a right-hander, appeared to gesture towards fans seated in the bullpen stands. Videos shared on social media show him jumping up, reaching out towards the crowd alongside police and security personnel.

What led up to this incident remains unclear, with fans reportedly removed from the stadium, as noted by Cody Stavenhagen from Athletic. The Pirates have not made any comments regarding the situation yet.

This season, the 29-year-old Santana sports an impressive 1.72 ERA and has racked up 21 strikeouts over 31¹/₃ innings against the Pirates, managing not to allow any runs during the second game of the doubleheader.

It’s interesting to note that Santana joined the Pirates midway through the 2024 season after being picked up off waivers from the Yankees. His journey has certainly had its ups and downs, but he’s become one of the more valuable players on the team.

Reflecting on his career rejuvenation, Santana expressed appreciation for Aroldis Chapman, who he regards as a mentor. “He must have seen talent in me, not just with the Pirates, but from where he’d been before,” Santana mentioned. “He can guide me and share wisdom, and it’s always helpful to connect with someone who recognizes your potential.”

Chapman, who was with the Pirates last season, showed Santana a new workout routine, which he has adhered to diligently. “I did that routine every day without fail, whether things were going well or not. It’s about consistency; even if the results aren’t ideal at times, sticking with your routine helps you improve,” he said.
