Fatty Liver disease refers to the accumulation of excess fat within liver cells. When this condition isn’t linked to alcohol, it is termed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. According to the American Liver Foundation, while it’s normal for the liver to contain some fat, anything above 5-10 percent of its weight raises concerns, qualifying it as fatty liver (steatosis).
It’s important to be aware of the signs that might indicate you have a fatty liver. Dr. Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist specializing in digestion and liver health, shared a video on Instagram outlining the three key symptoms to watch for.

In his video, Dr. Salhab highlighted these symptoms, noting that the last one is particularly common.
1. Fatigue
The first sign he mentioned is fatigue, which he said is perhaps one of the most frequently reported symptoms among individuals with fatty liver. He suggested that this might be tied to metabolic issues in the liver and potential sleep disturbances that can accompany fatty liver disease.
2. Pain in the Upper Belly
Another symptom to look out for is discomfort in the right upper quadrant of the stomach. Dr. Salhab pointed out that this pain can occur unpredictably throughout the day or after eating and might signal active inflammation in the liver.
3. No Signs
Interestingly, Dr. Salhab stated that the most common symptom of fatty liver is the absence of any noticeable signs. He explained that many individuals with fatty liver often have no symptoms at all, with about 50 percent even presenting normal lab results. This is concerning because it may indicate hidden inflammation, and symptoms might only emerge if liver failure progresses.
It’s crucial to remain vigilant, as the misleading nature of the condition can mask ongoing liver issues.
