Indiana Fever’s Struggles Against Golden State Valkyries
On Thursday night, the Indiana Fever faced off against the Golden State Valkyries, and it was a challenging game for Caitlin Clark. Although she didn’t need protection from her teammates this time, it was clear that the Valkyries weren’t making it easy for her.
Despite her usual sharp shooting, Clark struggled during the 88-77 loss. She only converted three out of her twelve attempts from the field and missed all seven of her three-point shots. This setback followed a game where the Fever blew a 13-point lead, bringing their record to 6-6. Not quite ideal.
Clark finished with 11 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds but also turned the ball over six times. Her teammates didn’t fare much better, with the Fever shooting just eight of twenty-nine from beyond the arc. Interestingly, Sophie Cunningham, who had been referred to as Clark’s “bodyguard” on the court during previous matches, was the only teammate to hit multiple threes.
The Valkyries, meanwhile, matched the Fever’s record of 6-6, powered by Kayla Thornton’s impressive 16-point performance, which included five three-pointers. The bench made significant contributions as well, with Tiffany Hayes scoring 14 points, Chloe Bibby contributing 12, and Lecitycha Amihele edging up to 10 points.
On the Fever side, Aliya Boston was the standout with 17 points, supported by Kelsey Mitchell’s 16 and Natasha Howard’s 13. However, the turnovers were a critical issue, with the Fever giving up the ball 17 times while only forcing 7 turnovers from the Valkyries.
This game stood out particularly because it followed an intense encounter with the Connecticut Sun just a few days earlier. In that match, Clark had to contend with some rough play that included physical altercations, which certainly added tension to her performance on the court.
Looking ahead, this wasn’t the response the Fever or Clark wanted following the heated game against the Sun. They will have the chance to bounce back on Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces.
