Incident at Halle Open Involving Alexander Zverev
German tennis player Alexander Zverev encountered an unusual situation during his match at the Halle Open on Wednesday. In the midst of a game against American Marcos Giron, he paused to assist fans struck by a loose advertising board that had fallen during the match.
This incident occurred in the first set. According to reports, the 62-year-old woman, seated in the lower stands, was hit when the advertising panel detached and fell.
Both Zverev and chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein rushed over to ensure she was okay, while another player provided her with an ice pack. Thankfully, she sustained no serious injuries but was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
Ralph Weber, the tournament director, expressed regret over the incident, noting it had never happened in the event’s 32-year history.
Event managers, Udo Kleine and Uwe Greipel-Dominik, speculated that the board fell due to screws loosening as they were “taking the drums against the board.” After a review, the match resumed without delay.
As part of the recovery, the woman received a complimentary pass to next year’s tournament. Despite the disruption, Zverev went on to defeat Giron in straight sets.
Later that week, Zverev advanced to the quarterfinals, where he faced Italy’s Flavio Kobori.
