Portland Riots Target Law Enforcement
On Wednesday night in Portland, groups of individuals confronted law enforcement with fireworks and explosives. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released video footage showing the unrest, which stemmed from opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.
DHS reported that “last night, the Portland riots violently targeted federal law enforcement, with about 250 individuals launching fireworks that temporarily blinded officers and storming an ICE field office.” In the aftermath, five people were arrested on various charges, including assault against federal officers.
Moreover, a DHS representative stated, “We do not passively stand by while these individuals act with cowardice. Our officers are facing a 413% increase in attacks when they arrest serious criminals such as murderers or rapists. The message from our team is clear: you won’t deter us. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to uphold the law. If you assault a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
According to reports, a Texas man is facing charges for allegedly plotting to target police officers during a recent anti-ICE riot in Los Angeles. The Department of Justice stated that 48-year-old Grzegorz Vandenberg was charged for “transporting explosives across state lines with intent.” It was noted that these explosives can be used to injure or threaten people.
Vandenberg allegedly visited a travel center in Roseburg, New Mexico on June 12, where he bought various fireworks and explosive devices, seeking recommendations on which could be thrown at individuals to cause harm.
He reportedly claimed to be a former army special forces member and mentioned that he could create pipe bombs. According to the DOJ’s announcement, Vandenberg intended to travel to Los Angeles for the riot with plans to harm law enforcement or government officials.
Additionally, he invited others to join him and his group in California.
