This year’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade promises to be particularly steamy, and not just because of the weather.
The event’s organizers have announced that a porn star will be crowned this year’s Queen Mermaid for the first time in the nearly 50-year history of the beloved Brooklyn tradition.
The actress, known as Queenley, expressed mixed feelings about being the first in her profession to take on this role. Among her accolades is the Adult Video News Award for Best Orgy.
“I’m honored to be the first,” she said. “It’s crucial to have representation for sex workers. I know porn stars are the most recognized, but I’m proud to represent the community at such an iconic New York celebration.”
Queenley, who had been informally acknowledged with that title years ago, was officially invited last week to be the queen for this year, alongside Eugene Hutz, the King of Neptune.
She didn’t hesitate in accepting the honor and reflected on the “really iconic list” of past queens.
This Saturday, she will parade on a float adorned with an elaborate crown and dress, crafted by a friend. Initially, when she was told she would be the first adult film actress in this role, she realized the significance of it.
“New York embodies creativity and freedom. People come here from all over to express themselves and connect with other unique individuals,” she commented.
Despite its progressive history, Queenley noted that it took 43 years for a porn star to be chosen as the festival’s monarch.
“The industry is often stigmatized and remains isolated from other sectors,” she explained. “It’s fascinating that we’re stepping into this role at a time when many rights are being challenged, especially for the adult community.” She mentioned the growing restrictions on adult content in numerous states.
Queenley entered the adult film world in 2022 after spending a decade immersed in New York’s underground music scene with her band, “Satin.” She sees all her work as an extension of her creativity.
“Curiosity drives me. If something seems daunting, taking it on becomes a personal challenge—it’s part of my artistic journey,” she noted.
Since then, she has garnered several accolades within the adult film industry and her music career.
In 2024, Queenley was recognized with awards for Best New Starlet and Best Music. She recently defended her title for Best Music and secured the Best Orgy award this year.
Moreover, her experiences in the adult industry have influenced her music, with her upcoming single, “Down,” set for release next week. She describes it as a fun drum and bass track that reflects her identity as a porn star.
The new song marks a shift from her previous disco style, leaning towards pop and sharing a playlist with artists like Charli XCX.
The parade organizers chose Queenley for her strong ties to the club scene and her positive impact as a sex worker, with the New York Post quoting Adam Lynn, the new artistic director at Coney Island USA: “At the end of the day, sex workers are part of our community, and we are thrilled about her participation.”
Queenley acknowledges that some may criticize her groundbreaking role but hopes for an open-minded embrace of diversity.
“This parade celebrates freedom and acceptance. I understand that nudity is a part of it,” she stated. “Sex workers are individuals, artists, and so much more. For some, it’s just a job, but for others, it’s a fulfilling career.”
