James Clyburn Supports Cuomo in NYC Mayor Race
Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), often called the “kingmaker” of the South, has lent his political backing to former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in his bid for New York City mayor.
The Democratic primary for the city is set for this Tuesday.
Clyburn, who played a significant role in Joe Biden’s 2020 nomination, expressed his support for Cuomo, highlighting their long-standing relationship dating back to Cuomo’s tenure as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Clinton. He noted their work on housing issues, particularly for underserved communities.
“We are proud to be part of Andrew Cuomo’s supporters for the mayor of New York City,” Clyburn stated.
In response, Cuomo expressed his gratitude, acknowledging Clyburn’s consistent alignment with progressive values, despite his own resignation in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal. “Clyburn has always been on the right side of history,” he mentioned.
Looking back, Clyburn’s influence was crucial during the 2020 Democratic primary, especially in South Carolina, which helped propel Biden’s campaign. Reflecting on history, Clyburn suggested that it would ultimately judge Biden’s presidency fairly.
Clyburn doesn’t seem to be just focused on New York, though. He emphasized that the NYC mayor could be pivotal for the National Democratic Party. He pointed out the challenges posed by the Trump administration, urging the mayor to defend urban autonomy and democracy.
