Rafael Devers Trade: Red Sox Manager’s Perspective
Most fans of the Red Sox seem to be on board with the trade that sent Rafael Devers from Boston to San Francisco. Interestingly, manager Alex Cora appears to be quite okay with this decision.
According to a report from ESPN, Devers expressed feelings of being “lied and betrayed” by the Red Sox on Friday. Still, Cora backed the organization’s choice to move on from the 28-year-old star.
Cora has been with the team since 2018, a stretch during which he managed the Red Sox for seven seasons. He led them to a World Series title in his first year, and until this week’s trade, Devers was the last player remaining from that championship team.
Despite their shared history as players and coaches, Cora seems to understand the necessity of the trade. It was just time to part ways with Devers, he believes.
Devers, a homegrown talent who signed with Boston when he was only 16, has had a notable career but faced challenges during the current season and offseason that complicated his future with the team.
His situation intensified when the team signed Alex Bregman, which resulted in Devers being asked to take on a designated hitter role. He consented reluctantly. However, a further injury to Triston Casas forced him back to playing a position, leading to tension in his relationship with the team.
Cora, while striving to keep the team competitive, has been focused on developing young prospects like Roman Anthony, Christian Campbell, and Marcelo Meyer. Yet, the complications of managing Devers—who was resistant to changing positions—seemed to push Cora toward supporting the trade to the Giants.
Boston and San Francisco are set to kick off a three-game series on Friday.
