Eric Dane reflects on positive days following ALS diagnosis

Eric Dane Reflects on Victory Amidst ALS Diagnosis

Eric Dane is embracing a significant milestone in his life after revealing his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The 52-year-old actor shared the news of his diagnosis in April, outlining some of the painful impacts of the neurodegenerative condition, particularly the loss of function in his limbs.

In light of these challenges, the star of “Countdown” has taken a measured approach, focusing on one day at a time. “We’re doing great things today,” he expressed to Fox News Digital. “I’m getting closer to this one day at a time, but today is a good day. So it’s a victory,” he added.

Dane, who is widely recognized for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan in “Grey’s Anatomy” from 2006 to 2012, recently opened up about the struggles he’s faced since his diagnosis during an interview with Diane Sawyer.

“I’m fine today. I’m closer to this day. Today is a good day. That’s a victory,” Dane stated.

He shared that, as his illness progresses, he currently has only one functioning arm, with the right side of his body having “completely stopped working.” Reflecting on his experience, he mentioned that his journey was handled “with subtlety and respect.”

Speaking about the interview with Sawyer, which aired recently, he elaborated on how he finds hope amidst his struggles. “I’m very hopeful…I don’t think this is the end of my story,” he remarked, emphasizing his intention to maintain a positive outlook. “That’s what I felt from Dr. Merit Cudkowicz when I met her… There was a sense of hope that I didn’t get from the other doctors.”

Interestingly, Dane revealed that some medical professionals he spoke with seemed more focused on monitoring his decline than offering proactive help. He mentioned that various risk factors for the illness range from environmental issues to sports injuries.

In sharing his story, Dane explained how he initially misinterpreted symptoms, thinking repetitive text messages had fatigued his hands. However, he eventually sought medical attention, leading to a neurologist’s evaluation that confirmed his condition.

Despite the physical challenges posed by ALS, Dane remains determined not to let it derail his career. “I’m going to ride this until the wheels fall,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of staying engaged with his work, particularly on the new Amazon Prime series “Countdown,” where he works alongside Jensen Ackles.

Echoing his feelings, Dane mused, “I feel good when I’m at work,” while acknowledging that there are certainly challenges. He maintains a positive mindset, underlining that clarity is vital amid his circumstances.

Ackles has commended Dane’s work ethic, pointing out that he performed admirably on set every day. Dane, on his part, humbly mentioned that he sticks to his lines and shows up on time, reinforcing his commitment to his craft.
