Bill Maher and Rep. Wesley Hunt Critique Whoopi Goldberg’s Comments
On Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” host Bill Maher and Texas Representative Wesley Hunt engaged in a spirited discussion with Whoopi Goldberg regarding her comments about the lives of Black Americans compared to those living under the Iranian regime.
Maher suggested that the New York Times has adopted a more balanced stance on transgender issues, implying that Democrats might be finding a path back to rationality. This was after Goldberg commented on Black Americans’ experiences juxtaposed with those oppressed in Iran.
Whoopi Goldberg Faces Criticism Over Controversial Comparison
Goldberg received backlash after a heated exchange with fellow panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin, who highlighted significant human rights violations under the Iranian regime, including the persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals and the enforcement of strict dress codes on women.
Maher lightheartedly pointed out the severity of Goldberg’s comparison, suggesting Democrats might need to reconsider their messaging. He quoted her very directly, emphasizing the dark history of racial violence in the U.S.
Hunt firmly disagreed with Goldberg’s perspective, arguing that his own successful experiences as a Black man in America contradict her views. He emphasized that he represents a majority-white district in Texas, where he feels judged by his character rather than skin color, citing his ancestry and progress as a lawmaker.
He exclaimed, “It’s America,” while illustrating the changes over generations, noting his father’s upbringing during the Jim Crow era and his own position as a Republican lawmaker in a predominantly white area.
Hunt further expressed disinterest in celebrating “special days” like Black History Month, suggesting that such observances contribute to a culture of sensitivity. He stated he’s simply proud to be an American and believes everyone should share that sentiment.
